BrightLeaf & The Sacred Idol: The first several pages.

It's been a while, I know, but I've finally got my act together. Along with trying to get Brightleaf done before SPX, I've also started work on a simpler project that I'll be putting into minicomic form, known as "The Gem of Power", more on that later.

Here are the first seven pages of Brightleaf & The Sacred Idol's final inks, colors to come soon. Later on I'll post some of the research that went into creating this world.

The Brightleaf Continues

Hey there, casual blog-watchers. Sorry for being a little tardy on the posting schedule, earlier this week I had something of a freakout with my work, and it got a little out of hand. So apologies all around!

Today though, at SCAD was Editor's Day, which was an extremely positive experience filled with alot of great critiques and loads of shmoozing. As a celebration for rising out of my depressive ashes, I will post the first two pages of "Brightlead & The Sacred Idol."

After finishing the five page comic for the anthology a couple months ago, I instantly new I wanted to do more with BrightLeaf, and it's finally happening!

Once again, some work from Advanced Storyboarding. Professor Goto has us flexing our nerd muscles to the max by assigning us a Jedi/Sith fight scene, designing everything from the characters to the world they're fighting on.

JCB Commercial Boards

For my Advanced Storyboarding class, we were assigned to work with some of the college's Industrial Design majors, who are working close with a construction equipment company known as JCB.
The ID Majors tell us that JCB, a European company, currently has problems marketing itself in the USA because apparently their products are seen as feminine. So it's the ID Major's job to do some marketing research and find out who JCB should be pin-pointing.
They gave us some data, and we figured out that we should be doing a commercial showing the power of JCB through the faults of their competitors.

The boards are supposed to as if they were screencaps, so there was to be no camera movements displayed or iconography that would confuse.

So, here are my boards, in sequential order:

Fluke '08 - Sketches

This weekend I drove to Athens, GA to participate in Fluke 2008. A small gathering of minicomic artists in the 2nd floor of a bar - Tasty World - where you can set up a booth to sell your wares, trade, mingle and generally have a good time.

I was prepared this year, I brought about eight different comics this year, but sadly, it started an hour earlier than I originally thought, so I had something of a bad booth all the way in the back of the bar, but I was able to sell a few copies of each. Most were handed out to trade.
I brought two first timers to Athens, my good friend Josh and Lynette, a girl I've known for a while and has just gotten her first taste of minicomics last quarter in our Minicomic class. Both loved Athens and had a great time.

One of my friends took a few pictures if I recall, I'll have to get it out of them to post here soon. I'll even take a shot of my monumental pile of aqquired comics, which I can tell you is quite large.

For the most part the trip was uneventful, aside from getting lost on the ghostly Georgia roads late at night, trying to stumble back into Savannah.

Here's a few sketches I ended up drawing, hopefully they're entertaining.

Portfolio Follies

Well, I felt it was necessary to post again, given that my job hunt will be starting pretty soon. It's my last quarter in college of my Senior year and it's time to get serious. I'll be posting new work on here at least once a week to show some sort of productivity.
This week I'll post character sheets of two of my favorite creations to date: Brightleaf and Eyeball.

You might remember them from my last post. Since then I've become infatuated with the plucky little duo, and I'm starting on a 20+ page story, where Brightleaf must find a way to protect his village from a band of mysterious outsiders. It might be a little more involved and maybe darker than my original story, but hopefully I can connect with my readers by flesh out Brightleaf and Eyeball's friendship.

Anyway, this character sheet I put together a few nights ago in preparation for my portfolio I sent out to Cartoon Network in hopes for an internship.

Pantomime Anthology Submission.

I figured I'd post this, since this is supposed to be my art blog and all, though I seem to dismiss it alot, like all my other online journal type things.

Anywho, this is my submission to SCAD's Sequential Art Anthology, the theme was Pantomime. So without further ado, I give you Brightleaf's Journey:

In all honesty, creating the comic was pretty much a product of shaving a good idea down for deadlines. I started this quarter without a clue what to base my anthology piece on, since the theme was so open ended, I could pretty much do anything, as long as I don't use words!

But then I doodled up that cyclops monster, and fell in love with the design, and the story basically wrote itself around him. Originally the story was supposed to be 8 pages long, and the cyclops had an accomplice, an older version of Brightleaf's people who kept the cyclops as a friend/quard dog and the people had built up rumors that the monster was truly evil.

Due to time constraints, I ended up writing that portion out, but I kept the folklore, since it the Mayan-inspired art tells a fun story without any words, which obviously fit the criteria for the anthology.

The biggest triumph in the comics is, in my opinion my use of backgrounds, I think I finally gained a new plane in my work, and that I really pushed myself to the limit. Sadly, I didn't get into the Anthology, but I still have 5 really awesome pages to show off.

I'm posting this out of order, I know, but this is probably one of the more impressive comics I feel I've done. This was after I finished the most stress inducing project of my life, and I wanted to do something 'easy' for the District's Comixstravaganza. So I kicked around some silly 1-2 pags ideas, but thenI talked them over with my good friend Pranas, and he gave the basic premise of the comic, which forced me to make it to 4 pages. Which is the most fun I've ever had drawing a comic.

Megacon: The Meganing

Well I've just returned from SCAD's trip to Megacon and boy are my arms tired! Infact, so are my legs and neck is sort of cramped too.

Anywho, despite the fact that my day was 60% Bus Ride and 40% Convention Browsing I had a damned good time. And I almost felt a bit more accomplished than I usually do when exiting a con. Maybe because I actually purchased objects relavent to my major!

I say that I felt accomplished because I ran across a familiar face, K.C. Green who does this great comic Horribleville (in my links section), and I patronized him by purchasing 3 of his Mini-comics, and giving him my own Mini-Comic Uneventful Goings-on (which is kinda crappy since it has some of my freshman work in it). Not only did he seem to enjoy it but also the guy who runs the website K.C. gets his hosting, nightgig.com and even seemed somewhat interested in having me as an artist. That was a huge ego boost! I even gave them

Otherwise the con was quite hum-drum but I did make sure to buy up as much Deadpool as I could see, since I've fallen in love with the lovable little freak as of late. Also I watched a bunch o LARPers beat the crap out of eachother with foam bats in the funniest of ways.

Let's just face it.

I'm never gonna ink that 24 hour comic thing. Just a fact of life because I've been so damned busy as of late. Why infact this weekend I need to pencil 10 comic strips, 90+ storyboards about the Simpsons, And 30+ entries in my 'art journal' (which entails chronicling some color-theory bullshit) and revising a script for a play that got about a 70% on. I AM NOT BUSY AT ALL NOSIREE.

The Distract

Alright, well, Hourly Comic Day sorta petered out around Midnight last night. Mainly because nothing really happend besides stupid internet banter. Also I retract the "tommorrow" thing about inking them because I'm too goddamned busy with school work this weekend.

Oddly enough, I was able to finish my latest Come-Up-Ins before 2am!
